The IBS and its regions promote biometrics in research, teaching and application. The Society
is dedicated to the application of statistical and mathematical methods in the health and life
sciences, including agriculture. It is co-editor of the Biometrical Journal, organizes training
and an annual colloquium and awards prizes to young scientists.

The German region has around 900 members and is thus one of the largest of the IBS.
Since 2010 Werner Brannath has been Professor of Applied Statistics and Biometry in the
Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. He heads the Department of Biometry at
the Competence Centre for Clinical Studies Bremen and is the chairman of the examination
board of the Master's programme in Medical Biometry/Biostatistics. His research includes
applications of statistics in medicine, multiple test problems and innovative study designs.
